RETINOL...WHAT'S IT REALLY ALL ABOUT?

by Christina

WHAT IS RETINOL ANYWAYS?!?

  1. It's any animal form of Vitamin A!!!  BUT- it can be derived from: butter, lemongrass, wheat germ oil, carotene from carrots, & synthetics.
  2. Retinol is also produced naturally by the body!
  3. The usual commercial production of Retinol usually requires that is be synthesized in order to get the end result of Retinol utilized in cosmetics.
  4. Can be called both the following names: Dimethyl, Dry-formed Vitamin A, Timethyl-1-Cyclohexen-1-yl, Afaxin, Acon, Agiolan, All-trans Vitamin A Alcohol, & Alphalin {I had NO idea that Retinol went by SO many different names AND that it could be animal derived!}

WHAT DOES IT DO?

This has been a long-debated case-in-point with Retinol for many years- exactly what are the benefits of this stuff and IF there are benefits, what are they? From the research that I have done over the years and from my own personal usage, here's some of what I've been able to figure out!

It's usually market for anti-aging for a reason, but it's overall skin benefits have been clear for myself and many others! It communicates with cells on a constant basis and in turn is a fantastic antioxidant agent as well! It continues to aid in repairing skin cells, while also creating better ones as well. With it's wonderful support of antioxidants that improve your skin's overall skin structure, there are a LOT of power-packed benefits with Retinol that are easy to see with even a short period of usage!

HOW DOES IT WORK...REALLY?

Retinol does require certain factors for it be most effective and to ensure that the product your using is actually doing its job! This means that Retinol NEEDS to have something break it down in order to be absorbed by the skin- a good example would be retinoic acid which is actually a component of Retinol. When this is combined WITH Retinol, the results are product stability, good absorption in the skin, and overall product effectiveness. It IS VERY air-sensitive so IF exposed constantly to air, Retinol will quickly lose its effectiveness!

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  1. AVOID Combinations of Retinol and SPF- the two ingredients do NOT interact well and can cause a skin irritation for many people or it can cause the Retinol to become ineffective! Retinol is highly susceptible to sun exposed, regardless of the amount of SPF that you are wearing so it really is a waste your time and money to worry about this combination!
  2. Try using ONLY at night, due to high skin sensitivity of Retinol usage!
  3. DO NOT use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as this it NOT recommended :(
  4. If you are using a facewash with Retinol as the prime or target ingredient, I suggest trying another cleanser all together! It is probably as waste as the product with be going down your drain more quickly that it can actually be absorbed into your skin in order to have any effectiveness.
  5. Stick with Retinol products that are in tightly closed pumps and tubes as those will keep the product's effectiveness the longest and will prevent any air from getting to it as well!
  6. THROW OUT after a couple of months of opening a product containing Retinol, as it will no longer be effectively working!

ARE THERE ANY PRODUCTS THAT i RECOMMEND?

JURLIQUE-aGE PREVENTION ESSENTIALS KIT $61

This is an fantastic starter kit for almost any skin type and age! It's a great addition to most anyone's skin care routine and includes an ORGANIC alternative to Retinol- Moth Bean Extract!!! It's ONE of the ONLY products on the market that I have been able to find that has an all-round good Retinol-type kit for a decent price AND it's NOT an animal derived Retinol :) It also has NO: Parabens, Sulfates, OR Phthalates! I was really impressed with the kits generous sizes of 3 choice products that were really put in the kit to aid in creating beauty, healthier results for your skin! The set contains: Herbal Recovery Advance Serum .5 oz.; Herbal Recovery Night Cream 1.7 oz.; and Herbal Recovery Eye Cream .17 oz.

Dr. dennis gross skincare-14 day challenge with ferulic acid + retinol brightening solution $47

I was lucky enough to try this product on a whim and I was so fortunate that I did! I could tell the results with MUCH smaller pores AND overall brightness and hydration of my skin. It didn't break me out like some of the products do that have Retinol and other ingredients like the Ferulic Acid in the product, but Dr. Dennis Gross rarely gets things wrong and he proved again that he knows how to make good skin care products with his 14 Day Challenge product! The kit comes in two parts- treatment pads and a .25 oz. bottle of the Ferulic Acid + Retinol Brightening Solution :) It does NOT contain: Parabens, Sulfates, and Phthalates!

DR. BRANDT- gLOW RUBY CRYSTAL RETINOL HYDRACREME $65

I'm a BIG fan of Dr Brandt's products as well-they are ALWAYS high quality products that work! They can however, be a tad bit on the pricey side :( That being said, if I do splurge on one of his products, I also know it was well-worth the price and it will last forever! This product is NO different- you will definitely see a difference in skin smoothness and the nice thing about this product is you get INSTANT results with light-reflecting ingredients and skin illuminators that help aid in diffusing light :) It also does NOT have: Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes, Petrochemical, Phthalates, GMO's, and Triclosan! YES-that IS a long list and I think that's really a great factor about this Hydracreme- it's not full of irritating ingredients in addition to the Retinol that can already irritate skin!

bONUS BEAUTY REVIEW:

BENEFIT- FINE ONE,ONE $30:

I really wanted to LOVE this product...I really did, but I have to be fair AND honest and say that I didn't really care for it AT ALL :( It was a disappointment that the product seemed SO cute and a very neat idea all wrapped into one, but it was actually not a very well-designed product. Regardless of the Benefit name and the adorable packing that they usually provide, it just wasn't what I was expecting. Firstly, the directions actually have several suggestions-yet ALL of them advise to use the END color in Champagne pink to perform the suggested style and application. The problem is, you can't do this very well, no matter how hard you try as there are THREE products in stick form and they must be dialed up in order to show the product. The pretty pink highlighter is on one end of the stick, but still almost impossible to use. In fact, the only way you can really use the product is to get a VERY small amount of a specific color you are wanting by trying to do your best and rub on the stick in order to get it off. Otherwise, you are using ALL of the colors and using the stick to attempt to glide across your cheeks and lips as it suggests. This as you can imagine, does not quite result in the right color, even if you do blend as it suggests :( All, in all, I did NOT care for Fine One-One- I liked the IDEA.... it just wasn't for me!
