I SET OUT ON A MISSION TO SEE IF THERE WAS a true difference...
I've seen a LOT of reviews out there on luxe vx. drugstore reviews with both a positive and negative spin. I decided to set out on a mission: to see what great drugstore products out there I could find and THEN compare those beauty products to my own fav luxe products! Seemed like a perfect idea at the time...until it ended up being a little harder than I thought to find the comparable products I was looking for!
I visited one of local mass retailer giants and headed straight for the makeup isles. I had some basic products and needs I wanted to meet: find at least one lip product, one to two eye shadow products, a mascara, and a cheek product :) The mascara was difficult to find for several reasons, one main reason being that there were entirely too many brands and different types to choose from- in addition to numerous different price points! There were also a couple of brands that I had not even heard of, such as "Flower" that did slightly catch my eye was some nice packaging and current eye shadow colors.
I ended up getting 5 total products for around a grand total of $40! Now I know what you might be thinking...it seems like a fairly decent deal with that many products with that kind of total when ONE luxe product can cost that more or MORE. BUT, I decided that I needed to keep and mind and really see what the quality and use of these products was before making my decision based just on price.
Now to share my thoughts, impressions, and honest review of what I thought of these products AND I will also be comparing them each, to a specific luxe item as well! There will be two parts to this post which means that I will be splitting up the products: today's post will focus on the mascara and two eye shadow products :) The following day in Part 2, I will be reviewing the remaining two products- the cheek stick and glossy lip balm!
WHAT I GOT:
FLOWER ZOOM-IN ULTIMATE MASCARA- BROWN BLACK $7.98*
* Walmart pricing
- D-panthenol helps to smooth lashes and stimulate growth
- Naturally derived gellifying agent for ease in application
- Rice wax for smudge-proof color
- Ophthalmologist tested
Out of ALL the drugstore brands I purchased, this mascara was actually my LEAST fav :( I was really hoping quite the opposite and expected it to be my favorite item in the whole collection that I picked out, but I was very wrong :/ It did NOT have the right consistency to start out with- I know that sometimes products that have a natural or organic aim as this brand Flower does, they tend to sacrifice quality and/or formula due to that challenge of natural and organic ingredients! That being said, some brands pull this off very well, but Flower doesn't do that here with this mascara. This DO however redeem themselves with me with the last product that I'm reviewing in the post so DEF check it out...
It did go on fairly easily and I LOVED the unique concept of the brush that had THREE different options for how it was to be applied = lengthening, thickening, or volumizing affects! The idea is fantastic, but the delivery just wasn't there- my lashes were ok, but they seemed to clump together and were almost pasty. As the formula dried on my lashes, it became thick and heavy and left my lashes feeling slightly brittle :( Ultimately, the concept was great-the product itself just wasn't!
GIVENCHY- NOIR COUTURE 4 IN 1 MASCARA IN BLACK, $33*
* current pricing at Sephora.com
Based on a self-evaluation on 32 women after 4 weeks of daily application:
-91% had visibly volumized, curled, and lengthened lashes
-Based on clinical scoring on 32 women after 8 weeks of daily application:
-100% recorded lash beauty and strength, surface shine, evenness, and suppleness
If you are looking for an awesome mascara, this is DEF one to try. The brush is well made and designed and even though it does look somewhat odd- it works very well in lifting and separating. I also got a LOT of length which is what I really look for in my mascaras so I was VERY pleased with the overall affect and results of this mascara. I would highly recommend!! It's a cinch to use as well and will last all day and into the night easily without leaving your lashes feeling like they are brittle and going to break by the evening! :) It IS a little on the pricey side, but it will last you at around 3 months-which is really when it should be thrown out anyways. The container has that beautiful Givenchy touch too as a nice bonus!
MAYBELLINE EYE STUDIO- COLOR TATTOO, IN POMEGRANATE PUNK- 24 HOUR EYESHADOW $5.94*
* Walmart pricing!
I really wanted this product to be awesome too- but it really did fall short in my book :/ For starters, it could have been much less of a thick formula as it is well-pigmented. However, the formula doesn't allow for this pigmentation to come through and it just sits thickly on your lids and does not really blend well. It's also not composed of ingredients that I would recommend for sensitive skin OR for most in general as the ingredients are NOT healthy or organic at all. I used to like Maybelline in a far away time...but I really have moved on I think at this point with the brand period :( I have found brands and products that are much healthier for the skin :) I think "You get what you pay for" applies here!
MAKE UP FOREVER- AQUA CREAM EYE SHADOW, LIGHT LILAC SHIMMER $23*

Great product by Make up For Ever!!! I have loved EVERY product of theirs that I've tried and use a couple of their products and brushes on a daily basis so this was an easy buy for me :) I really knew I was probably going to LOVE it before I even tried it out! I was def correct in my assumption with this eye shadow- it's well pigmented and really good quality! It was very easy to put on with an eye shadow brush- Make Up For Ever makes one that is great if you do not have one - #226 Medium Eye Shader Brush- $25 :) There's quite a bit of product and it's going to last me a while, so the price is not bad either. It has a great shine to it so if you prefer matte type shadows I would DEF stay away from this item! A little bit goes a long ways, but it is also buildable and a light to heavy dusting can be applied to vary looks. The eye shadow is very blendable as well and it will blend excellently with other brands of eye shadows too.
FLOWER- THAT'S SO KOHL! KOHL EYELINER,in eye lighter: 0.06 OZ. $7.98*
* Walmart pricing!
NO: PRESERVATIVES, D5 OR TALC. THE LONG-WEARING FORMULA LASTS UP TO 12 HOURS. KOHL IT!!!
I was VERY impressed with this product out of ALL the drugstore products that I got in this bunch! It had all the right consistency of a high-end quality brand and product, yet it was under $8. What I really liked most was that it had REAL staying power after application- yet I was still able to smudge well with the nice foam tip. In addition to being nicely and cutely packaged, the color I picked is VERY pretty- the picture does not really show how prismatic and beautiful is actually is. I had no idea myself until I actually pulled off the wrapping and used it. When it hits the light, there is a neat pinkish-peach illuminating color that has a nice affect :) Flower did step it up with me on this item after trying their less-desiring mascara, this made me at least give them another chance in the future.
TARTE- SMOLDEREYES AMAZONIAN CLAY WATERPROOF LINER IN GOLDEN BEIGE, $22*
* sephora.com pricing!
What it is formulated WITHOUT:
This is my FAV luxe item on this list and there IS a really GOOD reason why :) Tarte is a good quality brand that is really conscious of making healthy beauty products that are great for your skin, and cutely packaged products to boot! This item is NO different :) It glides on very smoothly, lasts all day once set, and is really easy to smudge before the line sets in about a min. The line even comes with its own foam smudging tip and a large sharper that will fit the pencil! The color pictured below in Golden Beige is a beautiful color, with almost a mauve shimmer to it! It is a little on the higher end of the price range in regards to eye liners, but it makes up its worth in amount, the added sharpener and foam smudging tip, and quality of product! This item will last you a good while too!
