UNDERSTANDING HEALTHY BEAUTY INGREDIENTS & WHAT IT MEANS TO BE FORMULATED WITHOUT: PARABENS, SULFATES, & PHTHLATES.

by Christina

MANY OF US MAY HAVE HEARD OF ORGANIC INGREDIENTS....

I've been seeing the elimination of Parabens, Sulfates, & Phthalates in a LOT of beauty product formulas, but even I wasn't quite sure what they even were. I wondered if it really make a difference it they weren't in my beauty products?! After some research and really using products without these harmful ingredients, I decided that it was the right choice for me.

Let's start out with Parabens first...they do not seem to be very good for your skin as they are a type of chemical preservatives that are often used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They are generally much cheaper and efficient which is why they are often used, but there are organic alternatives such as GSE (grapefruit seed extract).

From what information I found, it does seem that a study in 2004 concluded that there may be a possible link to allergic reactions, breast cancer, and even increased estrogen. Many of these studies however, were ultimately left in controversy between the public and research scientists who finally did conclude there was not enough evidence for a direct link with Parabens to cancer and other health concerns.

I have noticed that many companies here in the U.S. started to make many of their beauty product formulas without it, but this may be done out of media fear and public response rather than scientific fact. It must be noted that the FDA , Health Canada, and the Toxicology Letters in 2013 determined that there were no health concerns with Parabens after several years and various studies.

As for Sulfates, these guys seem to actually be scapegoats and may not be what they have been accused of being for beauty products! I was surprised, but glad that I determined what they really were. Sulfates are some of the most widely-used detergent cleansing agents on the market and they are in almost everything from shampoos and skin-care products to cosmetics! They can be irritating and cause issues for those with sensitive skin, but there are also a LOT of other ingredients that cause the same type of irritation or more.

A lot of the attention that Sulfates have received has been due to the small amounts of 1,4 Dioxane that have been found in some Sulfates- which are classified as carcinogenic to humans. The studies done on animals for this particular Sulfate were actually ingested by the animals as well, which is NOT the same thing as being on one's skin! Again, its seems that just as Parabens, Sulfates have received a "bad rap" and it may have been for no reason :/

Lastly, let's take a look at what Phthalates are all about. They have a LOT of negative association as well and from what I could find, they have been found actually have a much lower risk to human than originally thought and they in fact have no adverse health affects as a result. This was determined by the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health in 2009, so the source is reputable for research done and I felt this also gave it some validity as well.

There has been some risk and link to a possible thyroid issue if Phthalates are ingested through for example, drinking water- but the risk to humans at this time remains unknown. This didn't really make me feel all that fantastic about Phthalates after I found this out, so this might actually be one on the list I WILL stay away from and try to avoid- especially until they conclude more research!

Ultimately, I've decided that I will continue to try and stay away from these ingredients for the most part, as none of them seem to be very healthy for your skin and there are other alternatives that can be better. I do now understand though, that it may not be always completely necessary and avoidable either. There isn't factual, scientific evidence to back all of the accusations and negativity up- although I do feel more aware of what ingredients really ARE harmful for my skin! I will make sure to avoid Phthalates completely, as those may have some validity to being harmful!

SO WHAT ARE SOME INGREDIENTS I SHOULD AVOID?

  • ACETONE- a VERY strong solvent that is usually used in Nail polish removers and is just plain harmful to skin and can cause extreme overdrying!
  • ALBUMIN- this can be found in egg whites of all places! It causes skin to actually constrict and can cause temp. smoothness, but it will end up leaving skin unhealthy and can cause irritation!
  • CLOVE OIL- this potent skin irritant has been known to be very inflammatory and with some research has also show this volatile substance to possibly cause skin-cells to die!
  • GOLD- yes- believe it NOT this IS TRUE!! I was very shocked by this so I made sure this one made my list! Not only has it "won" numerous and very dubious allergen awards, it does have a known, scientific risk of gold particles in general that include death of cells, toxicity, and even oxidative damage to skin!
