A MOTHER'S ADVICE...
My mother has told me for many years that fish oil was the "holy grail" of healthy living and swore by its many benefits! She took the supplements herself daily, so I knew it must be something that she really believed in- but I wasn't exactly on the same page in regards to living organically-minded and healthy back then either :/ Now that I am starting to get older, have a family and teenager myself, I've really started to pay attention to what I am putting in my body! I've also realized that my mother may have been on to something good...
WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?
Many fish oil supplements are derived from: mackerel, herring, tuna, halibut, salmon, sturgeon, mullet, bluefish, anchovy, sardines, cod liver, whale blubber or seal blubber. I'm really not comfortable at all with the the last couple on the list and would NEVER use products that contained animal blubber :( I don't think using whales or seals is in the least bit necessary in order to get good, nutritional fish oil! The product that I will be reviewing later in this post, is derived from Alaskan Pollock that is wild-caught here in the U.S. so I am confident I know where this fish oil came from!
what are the many fantastic benefits of fish oil?
For many centuries, fish oil has been used to treat many conditions ranging from heart and blood system issues to depression and Alzheimer's disease. One thing that may not come immediately to mind though, are the great benefits to skin that fish oil also provides! As fish oil contains two types of super important AND helpful omega-3 fatty acids: doscosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), it helps aid in boosting the hydration of your skin and regulating oil production. This in turn will reduce acne and breakouts!
There was also a study in 2005 from the Journal of Lipid Research that found that EPA has the ability to block the releasing of damaging enzymes that eventually cause collagen breakdown, that results in sagging skin! The added bonus of EPA is that since it's an anti-inflammatory agent in addition to an antioxidant, it can provide protection from the sun and even repair the damage the sun can cause to your skin.
WHAT YOU NEED TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A FISH OIL:
Dosage is one of the most important parts to taking fish oil as a daily supplement and it can also be confusing. Many of the fish oil supplements currently offered on the market do not offer good quality ingredients or do not provide the correct and recommended daily amounts. The daily suggested fish servings per week is 2-3 servings and most people do not get in this amount. It can be difficult to do as there are very few food sources to acquire it from other than fish! Also, on thousand mg of fish oil doesn't really mean 1000 mg of omega-3's, it actually means there's about 300 mg of omega-3's contained!
As for what is actually recommended in omega-3's, the 300- 500 mg EPA + DHA daily dose is the true and accurate amount that should be taken. After doing quite a bit of research, it seems that almost everyone agrees on this range! If you look closely, the brand should identify how much of this is in your fish oil. The product that I'm reviewing below from Life & Food, contains: 644 EPA's and 336 DHA's. Lastly, make sure that you know what kind of oil you are getting- i.e. where it's coming from and what kind of fish/animal!

I was really impressed with this company right from the start! Life and food has an excellent site where they provide excellent information and sell their awesome products and its well put together. They've even take the extra steps on their site to have their own blog, store ,and provide product reviews! ALL of their products are manufactured in a cGMP facility so you know that what you get from them is nothing but quality! Check them out at: www.lifefoodpro.com.
As for the product itself- I was really pleased with the shipping, packing, and quality! I received the item very quickly and it was well-sealed and came in a nice, dark plastic bottle. I didn't mind that it was not made of glass, as I am usually quite a klutz! It was easy to remove the seal without the huge amount of effort that I sometimes run into with supplement seals! It's great to know that what you are getting is sealed, but I don't need it to be made to the point that I can't get into it myself!
The product claims to have NO fish burps, BUT...I did have a couple! They were not bothersome and I only noticed that I might have done this perhaps up to 3 times in one day after taking the supplement, but I've really never found a fish oil supplement that did not cause these "fish burps". It should also be noted that I also never observed the annoying, almost-fish taste that you also get with these burps and there was a time or two where I did NOT have these "fish burps" at all after taking a dosage!
If you're searching for a good fish oil that's made in a GMP certified facility and comes from a company like Life & Food that cares as much about quality as they do, then I would definitely recommend this product! If you DO get any "fish burps", they will be minimal, the product is affordable, and you know you are really getting quality with Life and Food!
