WHAT IS WITCH HAZEL?!?
Sometimes called winterbloom, this flowering plant ia actually a shrub and even sometimes, but rarely a tree! They are very pretty ornamental plants with orange-to-red flowers that bloom during the winter and fall seasons. Witch Hazel contains chemicals called tannins and also has medicinal properties as it can be used to make a astringents and other healthcare products. Not only can it be used to treat sores, bruises and even swelling, but it can provide vital antioxidants (in the form of Flavonoids> they have a positive effect on all parts/layers of skin!) to the skin and heal many skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, cracked or dry skin, and varicose veins! There is however some more needed evidence and study done on the results of witch hazel on varicose veins.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS WITH WITCH HAZEL?
The short answer is YES- but they are VERY moderate if at all! It is considered likely safe for most adults when there is direct skin application involved, although it has been reported that some people actually experience skin irritation with usage. When taken by mouth, it is only possibly safe for most people, as it can cause a sour stomach for some and larger doses can lead to causing liver problems.
Witch Hazel DOES contain a cancer-causing chemical called safrole, but theses amounts have been determined by the FDA to be to small to be of any concern. There are NO reported interactions with witch hazel and other products, so it's safe to use with other beauty items in your routine as well! I've recently gotten the chance to try an awesome 20% Vitamin C serum from Radha Beauty that also contains witch hazel as one of its prime ingredients and I've included that review below!
RADHA BEAUTY 20% VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING SERUM $22.89*
I've had the great opportunity to try Radha Beauty's eye serum and I really enjoyed the quality and effectiveness of the product, so I was really excited to see how this product turned out! I really liked the bottle right off, as it was not the typical bottle I've seen most of the time for a serum. The bottle is not a bottle at all- it's a pump dispenser and encased nicely in metal with a plastic, yet sturdy inside core casing.
The product itself feels of a decent quality and has NO smell and that's impressive for the 20% high content of Vitamin C that it contains! It seems thinner than some of the other serums that I have used, but I have also noticed the formula tends to be thinner in general when there is a higher amount of Vitamin C in a serum. It did NOT however, take much of the product to easily spread a thin layer on my entire face and area on my neck.
The amount of product is an ample size at 1 oz. so you should be able to use this daily without using up the product quickly! The pump bottle keeps you from wasting product too which aids in product longevity as well! All-in-all, I absolutely LOVED this product and would definitely recommend if in the market for a serum or great product that contains Witch Hazel and Vitamin C, is organic, and very affordable!
As for results, I felt and saw them after the first usage. My skin was smoother, plumper, softer, and pores were smaller! As I continue to use, I've noticed that it always feels nicely moisturized and looks like I have almost an airbrush finish when I put my makeup on now! My skin's evenness and and brightness have also improved too :) This is a product that I'm going to add to my daily regimen!
