Aluminum, Parabens, DEA...Are They Really Unsafe?
You may have heard about some of these chemicals and compounds over the recent years and they've gained National if not world-wide attention as well. Of course there's a chance that some of the things we've heard about them may have been a little stretching of the truth, so I did a bit of digging on my own to see what I could find out. Here's the thing....there are definitely some things in deodorants and antiperspirants that are questionable, but the final verdict is out on whether or not some of these things could be the cause of some cancers and other health issues.
According to The American Cancer Society, the studies that have been conducted do not clearly & strongly support claims that there's no direct link between breast cancer and the use of deodorants and antiperspirants. However, the organization does state that Parabens might be a particular ingredient of concern. It refers to a study in 2004 that found trace samples of parabens in breast cancer samples, although the cause of this has not yet been discovered as a direct link.
Here in the U.S., the FDA does require that brands list parabens in the ingredient list if they are present, but I'm personally not really a fan of them at all. I've tried to stick with products that don't contain parabens when I can, although they are sometimes almost unavoidable it seems as they can be found in almost anything from food to makeup.
But again, the final verdict is still out on how much of a role these chemicals play on our bodies and skin. I will say however though, that it seems that much of the initial research doesn't look all that promising and I hope that some good clinical studies are really carried out so that these issues can be put to rest. I am probably like most of us here...until they do- I'm not taking the risk, I'd rather be safe than sorry ;)
Unfortunately, the options and alternatives out there for deodorants & antiperspirants is okay, but many of these products have fallen short for me. They either aren't that effective or they cause issues with my super sensitive skin. Luckily, I came across a great product recently from Nubian Heritage that is fantastic! Get the lowdown below:
The Beauty Closet Recommends:
Abyssinian Oil & Chia Seed
24 Hour Deodorant
This is a great product that really does the job and it smells wonderful. Nubian Heritage offers up additional nice-smelling scents like: Coconut & Papaya with Vanilla Oil, Honey & Black Seed with Wild Honey & Apricot Oil, Indian Hemp & Haitian Vetiver with Neem Oil, and African Black Soap with Aloe & Vitamin E. Their entire collection of natural deodorants features ingredients that will nourish skin- not irritate it. They're even good for those with oily or dry skin as well :)
What I loved about this one in particular was the scent- it's perfect as a unisex fragrance that the entire family would love too. The best part? It works well too- I didn't have to keep reapplying this throughout the day or end up with stained areas on my clothes as I sometimes do during the summer. This product really stands up to the Texas heat well and I would definitely recommend this one for anyone!
