Just Around the Corner...
It's truly hard to believe that Summer is already here....well in Texas at least :/ We tend to see very warm temps by May and it's not something that I'm necessarily a fan of- but, it's part of living in the state that you have to accept. I've lived here the majority of my life and I can rarely remember a Summer in Texas that wasn't really hot and there were a few that were 50+ days of 100+ degrees (°F) or more.
One thing I really look forward to during the Summer season, is the bright & fun beauty shades and products. My monthly Maven Julep box subscription is a great way to snag a few seasonal beauty items, without breaking the bank ;) Julep's June Collection includes 3 new shades of their Skip the Brush Creme-To-Powder Blush Stick, a new eye-liner shade from the When Pencil Met Gel collection, and 7 new nail polish shades. Get the lowdown on this month's Julep Maven box, below!

Normally, this box would cost you around $30 or a bit more, however I still had another month remaining on my gift sub from my fiance ;) I also have racked up enough points/Jules, which means I can snag another box for Summer too! I could have used these to help pay for any add-ons, or additional items I added to my past boxes- but I decided to save them up so I could get a FREE box instead! You can see how for this pricing, you're going to save over $20 if you were to buy these products individually and that's why I stick with the monthly subscription.
Not only do you get "first dibs" on up-coming new items from Julep's seasonal collections, but you can also have special early access to items in Julep's monthly Secret Store. This has some great products that are either brought back from past collections or seasons, or it's packed full of other great items that are only available for a limited time in the Secret Store.
What I was most excited about with this box, were the new polish colors which feature a decent array of shades that pop- perfect for Summer :) This month however, there were a couple of things that were a little disappointing :/ Let's start with the Lorraine nail polish. I usually love the shades that I end up picking out and this one appeared to be no less lack-luster, but it turns out that it's not as pretty as the picture illustrates it to be. Although the pretty pink has some "pop" to it, the gold shimmer that's also supposed to be there- it just doesn't show up all that much.
Now this might be the perfect shade for someone else- it's just not one that I liked. I'll admit that this is a very rare occurrence, as I normally love Julep's polish shades. As for the blush stick, I was really excited to try out this product too- I already have one of the original shades- when Julep first released this awesome new product a few months ago. I chose to go with a new shade from June's collection- Sweet Peach, since I do have fair skin and I thought this would compliment my complexion well.
Unfortunately, the product was a bit on the damaged side when it arrived and I wasn't aware of the issue until I actually opened it up. It appears that it was rolled up at some point until the product was firmly stuck into the top of the lid :0 When I say that it was stuck, I'm not joking- it was almost impossible to even begin to get the product out of the top! Luckily, I consider myself to be an individual that doesn't give up easily- I like to try and find unique ways around a problem, then just throwing up my hands ;)
After a bit of attempting, I was able to slide a knife into the lid and loosen the product's hold- then I tipped over the lid onto a plate and tapped down on top of the lid with a spoon. The result was that the product was freed and I was able to figure out a way to successfully place the product back where it should be, in its base.
I utilized some of the product that was still remaining inside the lid by retrieving it with a cotton swab and then using my fingers to fill in the damaged areas remaining after placing it back in the base. With a bit of craftiness, I managed to salvage about 95% of the product and I was at least happy that I was able to that- just not so thrilled that I had to utilize that much effort to fix it in the first place. As for how the product actually works- it ended up being the perfect shade I was looking for! Sweet Peach looks fresh and natural- perfect for Summer :)
The creaminess of the product goes on smoothly and finishes with a light, satin feel that won't annoy during the summer heat. If peach isn't for you or won't work well for your skin tone, there are other awesome shades available. Overall, I loved the product- but I will be contacting Julep's customer service about the state in which it arrived! The 3rd item that I picked for my Maven June 2016 box, was the Sunset Gold Shimmer "When Pencil Met Gel" liner. I thought this new shade from Julep's ever-growing liner collection, would be perfect for Summer.
It turns out, this shade is beautiful and has lots of beautiful shimmer & sparkle. I do wish it had a bit more punch of color, but it blends well and can be layered on darker liners or shadows to create a pretty & unique look. This also has surprising staying power- once it's been about a min. or less, this liner "locks into place" and won't budge until it's ready to be removed.
As for the Necco candies, they were an extra treat included in this month's box and I actually enjoyed them. I used to eat these quite often when I was a young girl and they were a fav then- I had almost forgotten how much I liked them until these arrived ;) Looking at my box overall, there are 2 items I really like and one that I wasn't all that happy with- in regards to my selection.
The broken product that arrived was a rare occurrence and I'm sure that Julep's customer service will make it right- they've always been fantastic when any issues arose in the past :) I will make sure to update this post here in the next few days, after I've had a chance to speak with them and let you all know what how my experience went!
