Switching Up Your Beauty Routine for Summer...
Does it Really Make that Much Difference?...
Turns out, that it makes a world of difference on what type of beauty products & cosmetics you utilize during the summer, versus the winter. Why? During the summer, different environmental factors come into play and as a result, your body & skin are affected and therefore react in different ways as well.
Want to know which products you should skip on and why? The Beauty Closet has you covered! Plus, learn which products are great alternatives that you can use in place of those that you can remove from your daily routine during Summer.
The Top 5 Beauty Items to Ditch for Summer:
I know what you might be thinking...that I'm a bit nuts for suggesting this- I'm guessing I'm not the only one who might feel a bit on the self-conscious side when it comes to ditching my foundation. I admit I've gotten used to its presence and it does such a nice job of hiding imperfections, for example.
But, during the summer it has a habit of causing more problems than its worth: it doesn't want to stay put- even with primer and makeup finisher- the heat doesn't encourage it to stay where you applied it.
Foundation are often thicker and can also clog pores, causing breakouts during these hotter months- that's something that I've experienced as well. A good replacement? Try a tinted moisturizer, BB+ Cream, or CC Creme instead! One of my fav's: tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen [$28]. This fantastic product comes in 5 different shades and is formulated with an SPF of 30- it's also oil-free, perfect for Summer :)
2. Oil-based Makeup Removers [for eyes & face]
These are okay to use in the winter, but they are definitely something you want to avoid during the summer- if at all possible. The excess oil won't help your skin that is most likely producing quite a bit more, due to the warmer conditions and increase sun & water exposure.
Go for oil-free formulas that are void of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and other harsh chemicals or irritants. Stick with mild and gentle products that are easy on the skin too.
Try: Philosophy Just Release Me Dual-Phase Oil-Free Makeup Remover [$19]. The fab product is powered with natural aloe, chamomile, & cucumber- plus it's void of the yucky stuff like sulfates, parabens, and phthalates!
3. Heat Tools:
What?!? Your curling iron or flat iron...that awesome tool you use to achieve gorgeous hair?! I know- we all aren't born with fabulous hair...I certainly wasn't ;) It looks great...after I've spent a bit of time, styling, and fiddling! Giving up this type of item at any time of the year is something that's not very easy for me to put aside for a few months, but your hair will definitely thank you!
Your scalp and head are put through a lot of stress during the summer with on-going sun & water exposure, so it's super important to treat it with extra special care and attention. If you're willing to ditch the curling iron- you can still achieve a great look, that requires not heat whatsoever! Try using a product that will help you achieve the perfect beach waves, apply while your head is flipped over and then scrunch with your fingers.
Flip your head back over and apply the product a 2nd time, allowing it to partially dry. Then re-scrunch your entire head and you're ready to go :) One of my top picks: Captain Blankenship Golden Waves Sea Salt Shimmer Spray [$28]. An excellent alternative that offers up and organic formula that not only adds texture, but gives your hair a beautiful golden shimmery glow!
4. Lipstick & Lip Glosses:
I know...I'm really knocking 'em out off the list today...but this is another one that you really can do without over the summer AND you will see a big improvement. Lipstick and thickly formulated lip products can cause issues during the summer because they prevent moisture from being locked out and your lips can actually dry out.
The constant sun exposure can also cause your lips to become chapped and dry too! Go for a product that contains natural ingredients, is a lightweight formula, and contains and SPF of 15+. Looking for a decent product to try? I love: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 in "Sugar Fig" [tinted pearlescent wine tint $24].
5. Dark & Dreary Nail Polish Shades:
It's time to jump into the seasonal spirit and add a pop of color to your beauty routine- this is a super simple, affordable, & fun way to do just that! Put away the darker hues with thick textures & glitz- instead go for lighter tones and shades, that have light & pretty sparkle or light golden glitter instead! One of my fav's for this summer: Formula X Transformers Top Coats- Nail Polish Effect in Serendipity [pink, purple, & gold multi-shaped confetti $12.50].
